We Bust Common Myths About Phone Repairs

When it comes to the topic of repairing a smartphone, there are a lot of naysayers out there who think that it’s just not worth repairing it.

As phone repair technicians ourselves, not only do we know that this is not true, but we also get to hear these comments first-hand from people who don’t think you can truly repair a broken smartphone.

While we understand that the allure of buying a brand-new phone is certainly strong and very, very tempting, today we want to bust some of those common myths and misconceptions about mobile phone repairs.

But before we do, we just wanted to let you know why we think it’s better to repair a mobile phone than replace it.

Why You Should Repair Your Smartphone

There’s a lot of conflicting information about whether you should repair a mobile phone or not.

Well, here at Fone Teknician, you can probably take a guess at what our answer to this question is. But it’s not just because it’s our bread and butter that we believe you should repair instead of replacing your phone.

Here are some of the reasons we think you should repair your mobile phone:

It is cost effective

A mobile phone repair is significantly cheaper than buying a new one – especially if you’re after a new smartphone! Repairs can start from as little as $79.

It saves you time

You don’t have to worry about going out to buy a new phone, waiting for one to be shipped to you, and the hassle of setting up a new mobile. We come to you to fix your phone and often, we can do it in under 30 minutes!

It is better for the environment

Repairing a mobile phone is the sustainable and eco-friendly choice. It’s estimated that there are more than 20 million mobile phones that are just sitting in people’s drawers at home being unused. If these end up in the landfill, that is a lot of unnecessary rubbish!

These are only some of the reasons why you should consider getting your phone repaired rather than replacing it.

Now, let’s move onto the myth busting!

10 Common Mobile Phone Repair Myths You Can Stop Falling For

Here are some of the most common misconceptions we hear when it comes to mobile phone repairs.

Myth One: A repaired mobile phone will never work as well as it used to

This is almost entirely dependent on who you choose to repair your mobile phone. You want to have your phone repaired by someone who is experienced, knowledgeable and uses original manufacturer parts.

If you decide to go for the cheapest fix, it may end up being a case of “you get what you pay for.”

However, if you work with someone with a strong history of repairs, great reviews and who only uses the best parts for their repairs, then there is no reason why your phone won’t be as good as it was before it broke!

Myth Two: Phone repairs are expensive and not worth it

Back in the day when smartphones were very new to the market, this might have been true. However, the cost to repair smartphones has dropped significantly, and is probably a lot cheaper than you realise.

What is expensive is buying a new phone. The latest iPhone can set you back close to $2000.

What makes a repair even better value for money is the fact that when you choose to work with a reputable and experienced technician (like us here at Fone Teknician), the work and parts installed during the repair will be covered by a guarantee. For us here, we provide a 3-year guarantee for our repair services.

Myth Three: Getting your phone repaired by someone other than the original manufacturer will void your warranty

This one is a common misconception, which has its roots in truth, making it totally understandable as to why people believe this.

Up until June 2018, this was the case. However, in 2018, in case of the ACCC vs Apple, it was found that if you decided to have your phone repaired by someone other than the manufacturer, this didn’t mean that your warranty would become void. Making it so much easier to get your phone repaired with confidence.

Myth Four: Phone repairs take ages, and you usually need to send your phone away

This one is definitely not true.

The only time it might take a while is if the repairer of your phone is waiting on a specific part or if their services are heavily booked out.

If a phone repair shop tells you that you need to send your phone away, walk away. Here at Fone Teknician, not only will we not take your phone away, but we’ll do one better, we’ll come to you and repair it in front of you (in Sydney, check out our service suburbs)!

Some phone repairs take longer than others and will be dependent on the extent of the damage, but on average, our phone repairs take around 30 minutes!

Myth Five: A water damaged phone cannot be fixed

If your phone went for an accidental swim and it’s not one of the newer ones that can handle a little bit of water, you might be a little worried that it can’t be repaired.

We won’t lie, a phone that experiences water or liquid damage is a challenging one to fix – however, it’s possible! The success rate is often dependent on the type of liquid that has been spilt on the phone, and what you’ve done since that occurred (find out the steps to take to give your phone the best chance of survival here).

One of the best things you can do, beside following those survival steps, is to provide your technician with as much information about the incident and your actions as possible!

Myth Six: Uncooked rice can fix anything

You’ve probably heard miracle stories of people dropping their devices in water and leaving them in uncooked rice for a few days, and then it’s fixed!

Now, while we won’t deny that this has ever happened, nor will we deny that rice will remove some of the liquid from the device, it’s not going to remove it all, and it’s not going to prevent corrosion of the motherboard.

In fact, leaving your phone in the uncooked rice can lead to starch and sugar finding its way into the phone and causing further damage.

Myth Seven: You can easily fix a phone yourself

We all love to secretly think of ourselves as having amazing and highly practical DIY skills. Now, while you might have some beginner’s luck, trust us when we say, do not bother to do it yourself.

First, you have to try to figure out what is wrong, then you need to figure out what parts you might need, and chances are, you’re going to get some cheaper alternatives that might save you money now, but not in the long run. Then you’ve actually got to try to do the repair yourself.

Going DIY on a phone repair is likely to lead to you causing further damage. And that’s just from trying to take the phone apart. There are some seriously specialist tools required to do it properly.

It’s a job best left to the experts!

Myth Eight: You’ll lose your data if you get your phone repaired

A lot of phone repairs are actually hardware related, rather than software related. Things like broken or stuck buttons, smashed screens, broken charging ports and cracked cameras. When we repair these sorts of things, your data is not being compromised.

While it’s always a good idea to back up your phone, talk to your repair technician before you have your phone repaired to see if that is required. They will be able to advise you of whether your phone’s data is potentially going to be compromised.

Myth Nine: The repair technician is going to look through your phone

Don’t worry, your secrets are safe, we’re not going to look through your phone.

We might check out some settings here and there, but trust us, we’re not spending our time checking out your photos or swiping on Tinder for you! We’ve got plenty to keep us occupied with the repair.

Myth Ten: A crack in your phone’s screen is only an aesthetic issue

This is totally false. While it doesn’t look great, a cracked screen is much more than an aesthetic problem.

If a screen is left broken, cracked or shattered, it can lead to dead spots, debris and liquid seeping into the phone easier, and eventually it can lead to the phone screen being completely unusable.

On top of it causing more issues for your actual phone, it can be dangerous for you too – you may end up with cuts and scratches on your fingers.

A screen repair for an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy smartphone is actually a fast and affordable phone repair!
